Angular Cheilitis

Angular Cheilitis (also referred to as perleche, angular stomatitis, or cheilosis) is a common condition that causes redness and inflammation as well as painful skin fissures, blisters and sores at the corners of the mouth. Due to its appearance and location, angular cheilitis is sometimes confused with a cold sore outbreak.

There are a variety of causes for angular cheilitis, including chapped lips, contact dermatitis associated with saliva on the skin, and bacterial, fungal, yeast, or viral infections. Malnutrition (iron, zinc, and riboflavin deficiencies) and illnesses such as diabetes and ulcerative colitis increase the likelihood of angular cheilitis.
