Erythema Nodosum (EN) is skin inflammation that involves bumps or nodules underneath the skin. The condition often presents along the shins or the front of the legs, below the knees. In some cases, nodules also appear on the calves, ankles, thighs and arms. Erythema nodosum inflammation first develops in the fatty layer of skin (the adipose tissue), and grows upward toward the skin's surface. The raised lumps are generally reddish in color and tender to the touch. They range from 1 to 5 centimeters in size. They may resolve spontaneously within 3-6 weeks, shrinking and flattening to leave a bruised appearance. Slight indentations where fatty layers beneath the surface have been compromised may also exist.
