Onychomycosis, or tinea unguium, is a fungal infection of the nail bed, matrix or nail plate that is present in one or more nails. The condition is most common in toenails and primarily affects adults. Fungus thrives in moist environments with little light and may permeate the nail through small cuts or separations between the nail and bed. It lives in wet areas such as swimming pools and showers, and tight shoes may obstruct air flow and allow fungi to grow.
