Jock itch is a fungal infection on the outer layers of skin. Also referred to as tinea cruris, tinea of groin, crotch itch, or ringworm of the groin. It is a form of ringworm and is characterized by an itchy ring-shaped rash that may be red and appear blistered.
Typically found in moist areas of the body like genitals, inner thighs and buttocks. Fungus causes jock itch, and it thrives in areas with trapped moisture. Jock itch gets its name from the people it commonly affects: athletes, or "jocks". Others who tend to sweat a lot, for example those who are are overweight, may also be highly susceptible to jock itch, as the folds in their skin are prone to moisture and fungus build-up.
It is more common for teenage and adult males to contract jock itch, however it can happen at any age, and women may also suffer from jock itch too. People with compromised immune systems are also susceptible to developing fungal infections of the skin. Jock itch has the ability to spread very quickly, and prolonged jock itch may trigger other infections or cause permanent discoloration of skin. Jock itch is most commonly diagnosed by looking at the appearance of the rashy skin. A skin culture may be taken by a doctor, but tests are usually not necessary to determine whether or not someone is suffering from jock itch.
