When athlete’s foot is suspected, using an over-the-counter antifungal treatment is a good way to start treatment. If symptoms appear manageable, at-home with anti-fungal remedies should clear the infection, however if pain in too severe, contact your doctor.
Some may want to seek professional, medical attention for athlete’s foot. At the appointment, the doctor will most likely be able to diagnose athlete’s foot by asking a few questions and visually examining the feet. In cases, when the infection is not responding to treatment, or if the symptoms look unusual, the doctor will collect a skin or nail sample. The sample may be evaluated on-site or sent out for lab testing.
The blisters associated with vesicular infection require extra attention. Your doctor may remove the tops of the blisters so they can dry out. Removal of one's own skin at home is not recommended. To gently and safely dry blisters at home; soak the feet in Burow’s solution (available at pharmacies or grocery stores) several times a day until the areas are dry, then begin application of antifungal ointment.
If athlete's foot becomes more severe, and does not respond to topical treatments, a prescribed antifungal may be needed. A doctor may prescribe both oral and topical treatments. The side effects of these medications should be discussed with your doctor during the appointment.
The risk for the return of athlete’s is always present regardless of initial treatment course.
