Sun Safety: Skin Cancer Prevention

June 2nd, 2014 | Seasonal, Skin care, Sunburn

It almost feels like summer out there, doesn’t it? It’s right around the corner and the sun’s rays continue to get stronger each and every day. That being said, it is about that time to discuss sun safety.

According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, “skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. More than 3.5 million skin cancers in over two million people are diagnosed annually.” In fact, over the past three decades, more people have had skin cancer than all other cancers combined. That’s a scary statistic.

To best protect yourself, it is important to follow prevention techniques and share them with your family. Awareness and education is the first step to prevention.

There are a number of prevention techniques. These include:

  • Refrain from being directly in the sun between 10 AM and 4 PM. During this time, the sun’s rays are at their strongest. Seek shade.
  • Choose the right sunscreen. You should always choose SPF 15 or higher and do not save it for the beach days. You should be applying sunscreen every day, especially to your face. Don’t forget to re-apply every 2 hours!
  • Avoid tanning beds and booths like the plague.
  • Wear sunglasses to protect your eyes AND the sensitive skin around your eyes. They mean more than just being stylish, you know!
  • Protect your scalp from sun damage by wearing a hat, ideally a broad-rimmed hat.
  • Make it a point to examine your skin every month. Get to know your skin – what is normal and what is not. If you notice anything abnormal, visit your skin doctor.
  • Speaking of a skin doctor, it may be a good idea to find one if you do not have one. A specialist can keep track of your skin health.
