Spring Cleaning: Create Your Own Natural Household Products

April 28th, 2014 | DIY

Have you started your spring cleaning yet? If not, no need to feel ashamed! It is not too late to start and we have a few recipes to share with you to kick off the cleaning. While it may be easy to turn to the household cleaners that are advertised on television, it may not be as easy to hear that these products are bad for the environment—and unfortunately, your health.

Rather than work with harmful chemicals, you can make your OWN natural household cleaning products. These natural concoctions are effective and will have far less harmful consequences than a major name brand.

Grab a couple plastic spray bottles from your nearest dollar store and get mixing!

Kitchen Cleaner

  • ¼ cup white vinegar
  • 2 ½ cups water

Glass Cleaner

  • ¼ cup white vinegar
  • 2 ½ cups water
  • ½ tsp liquid dish soap
  • 5 drops lemongrass essential oil (for scent… totally optional!)

Citrus Scrub

  • 1 cup baking soda
  • 2 tsp cream of tartar
  • ½ cup borax
  • ¼ cup grated citrus peel

Shower Cleaner

  • 6 oz white vinegar – heated up (only the first time you mix!)
  • 6 oz Dawn dish soap

Dish soap

  • 2 cups castile soap
  • 6 tbs water
  • 2 tbs white vinegar OR lemon juice

Floor Cleaner

  • ¼ cup dish soap
  • ¼ cup white vinegar
  • ¼ cup lemon juic
  • 10 drops of essential oil
  • * Add this mix to your bucket of warm water before using on the floor

Wood Cleaner

  • ½ lemon juice
  • 1 tsp castile soap
  • 4 drops essential oil

Granite Cleaner

  • ¼ cup rubbing alcohol
  • 1 drop dish soap
  • 1-3 drops scented oil (optional!)
  • Fill rest of bottle with warm water

As you can see, there are a number of alternatives to your typical cleaning product. We hope that you have found this post to be helpful and you start making your own. Tweet us once you have and let us know how it goes!

  1. First of all I want to say superb blog! I had
a quick question that I’d like to ask if you do not mind.
I was curious to find out how you center yourself
and clear your mind before writing. I have had a hard time clearing my mind in getting my
ideas out. I do enjoy writing but it just
seems like the first 10 to 15 minutes tend to be wasted simply just
trying to figure out how to begin. Any suggestions or
    tips? Cheers!

    Hello there!

Thank you for being a reader – so happy to hear that you are enjoying our posts. As for a few writing tips…

It generally helps me to create an editorial calendar ahead of time so that I have a set schedule of topics to cover. This allows me to get right to it, instead of sitting and thinking about what to write for 10-15 min. Try spending some time planning out your month of posts and see how it helps. I think you will find it much easier to concentrate when you have a topic ready to go.

    Good luck!
