Smoothie of the Month: The Green Machine

May 7th, 2014 | Fun, Nutrition and Health, Recipe

There is nothing quite as refreshing as a green smoothie. Just thinking about all the essential nutrients and you will be drinking makes the enjoyment THAT much sweeter.

During this lovely month of May, we have decided to share one of our favorite green smoothie recipes. We call this one the Green Machine. You’ll see why after you take a look at its ingredients!

The Recipe

  • ½ avocado
  • 1 frozen banana
  • 1 cup pineapple (fresh works best!)
  • 1 handful of spinach
  • 1 handful of kale
  • 1/3 cup almond milk (or your preference… coconut is delicious, too!)
  • 1 tsp agave (optional sweetener)
  • ½ tsp shredded coconut as a topping (optional)

Simply blend and top it off with your shredded coconut. Feeling nutty? Sprinkle crushed walnuts!

The Benefits

…Avocado, spinach, AND kale? Now do you see why we call it the “green machine?” These three superfoods are great for your overall health, including your skin. Let’s break down just a few of their benefits…

  • Research suggests that eating avocado may help lower bad cholesterol levels
  • May reduce the risk of diabetes, stroke, and coronary heart disease
  • Phytochemicals in avocados are rich and may help prevent the development of certain cancers
  • Phytonutrient compounds found in avocado have anti-inflammatory properties, reducing the risk of inflammation
  • Avocado oil nourishes the skin and also aids in treating psoriasis

  • Spinach contains an antioxidant that has been shown to lower glucose levels and increase insulin sensitivity in patients with diabetes
  • Its high potassium content can aid in lowering blood pressure
  • Promotes regularity due to its high fiber content, preventing constipation
  • The vitamin C in spinach helps to build and maintain collagen
  • Vitamin K is high in spinach, which has been associated with improving bone heath

  • Kale may reduce the risk of certain cancers since it contains organosulfur compounds. This includes prostate cancer.
  • Kale includes a high percentage of vitamin K, which helps bone health, the prevention of blood clotting, and more
  • Omega-3 fatty acids in kale can help fight against arthritis and asthma
  • Vitamin A is great for the skin – kale is full of it!
  • Kale is high in iron, which helps with cell growth

We hope you enjoy this recipe as much as we do! Healthy bottoms up!
