Smoothie of the Month: Blueberry Health Blast

July 9th, 2014 | Fun, Nutrition and Health, Recipe

It’s about that time again! Earlier this week, we discussed a number of health benefits that blueberries can provide you with. While we are already discussing and celebrating National Blueberries Month, we figured we would keep the theme going! This week we have an amazing blueberry smoothie recipe. Let’s dive right in!

The Recipe

  • ½ cup frozen blueberries
  • 2 large frozen strawberries
  • 1 banana
  • 1 cup spinach
  • ½ cup almond milk (or whichever you prefer!)
  • 1/3 cup Greek yogurt
  • 1 tsp agave or honey (to sweeten!)

As always, simply blend and enjoy. If you want, you could always toss a few blueberries on top to garnish.

The Benefits

Well, we did already discuss a number of health benefits in a post from Monday, but how about a couple others? There is no shortage!

  • The high fiber contained in blueberries working alongside antioxidants make it possible to dissolve “bad” cholesterol.
  • Compounds called anthocyanosides have been found to slow down visual loss.
  • Anthocyanins offer protection against hypertension.
  • A compound called pterostilbene is found in blueberries and may help protect against colon cancer.
  • With the highest count of antioxidants than any other fruit, blueberries contain types that can help prevent the growth of cancer cells (flavonols, tannins, and more).

Ready, set, blend!
