New Years Resolution Ideas

January 17th, 2014 | Fun, Seasonal, Self Improvement

Are you a new year resolution maker? How about a new year resolution KEEPER? We often set lofty goals in the face of the new year, and set ourselves up for failure.

Sure, running a marathon would be incredible, and more power to you if you can achieve that goal!

Losing weight, stressing less and eating healthier are some common new years resolutions. Here are some more:

But small, manageable changes can make a big difference in how you feel. And they’re the kind of promises to yourself that you can keep.

Here, we offer a few suggestions for some pretty awesome resolutions to consider for 2014. Make yourself a priority, and make it a great year!

Simple, Awesomely Doable New Years Resolutions

5. Out With the Old.

Start going through things now. The attic, the shed, the basement, the closet. Set aside things you’re willing to part with, and don’t be stingy.

If you haven’t even looked at it in the past year…or didn’t even know you had it in the first place…give it up. Host a yardsale when the weather gets warmer, and start fresh!

4. Positive Reinforcement.

Have you ever read a quote and thought, “Wow, that is PERFECT for what’s going on in my life right now!”? Make it a priority to do that on the daily, or at least a couple of times a week. Pick up a motivational quote book and leave it on your desk. Or sign up for positive quote emails. Life, love, motivation, inspiration, courage, faith, or a mix of them all.

Some positive words can lift your spirit in just a few seconds, so seek them out!

3. Be Free That Day.

This one’s easier said than done, but stop overbooking yourself, for Pete’s sake! If you’re like so many others, you leave very little time unaccounted for, and can feel like you’re just going through the motions. “Ack, I’m busy that day! Can we find another?” And fun things start to feel like obligations.

Free up a weekend, and see what crops up. Let the mood strike you. Take a long drive with the music on blast, or an impromptu walk on the beach. Meet an old friend for coffee because you both happen to be free – not because you feel pressured into hammering down plans. You probably never thought you’d have to schedule time with a bowl of ice cream and some TV, but that’s exactly what you need to do.

Commit to “you” time. Leave it free. See where it takes you.

2. Dust off the Dining Room Table.

This may sound like more of a chore, but hear us out. Clean up your table. Remove any bills, jackets, keys or other miscellaneous items that may accumulate there, and sit at it while you eat dinner. With whoever you live with, or by yourself.

There is something about stopping and connecting, and appreciating the food you’re eating. Heck, this may even tie into the ever-popular weight loss resolution, who knows. It doesn’t have to be every night. But sit at the table. Converse, or reflect. Enjoy. We promise you’ll like it.

1. Write to Yourself.

You have a million things going on. But you can only do so much. When you’re at work, be at work. When you’re making a sandwich, make a stinkin’ sandwich. Going jogging? Jog. THEN do whatever comes next. Don’t spend your jog anxious about cooking dinner, then cleaning, then packing lunch, then showering, then…

So write to yourself. Stick little notes where you’ll see them often. Mine is on my computer screen. “Be here now.” And do just that. Be as in the moment as possible. Or you’ll miss it, and it ain’t coming back! Commit to what you’re doing, and give it what you’ve got. Then move on!

Happy 2014, friends!
