New Ink? Caring for Your Tattoo

March 2nd, 2015 | FAQ, Skin care

A fresh tattoo is quite exciting, especially if you have created tattoo that is dear to your heart. While you may want to go around and show off your tattoo as soon as you leave the shop, it is important that you take a moment to understand tattoo after care.

All too often, tattoos will become infected due to improper care. You must remember that this tattoo is essentially a fresh wound! If you do not take the time to understand, your new tattoo could become infected and unfortunately, scarred.

Here are some tips to ensure that your tattoo heals properly:

  • Keep the bandage over your tattoo for at least two hours after leaving the tattoo parlor. The reason? To keep air-born bacteria from entering your wound!
  • Wash and treat your tattoo with lukewarm water, mild, liquid antibacterial soap. You should do this immediately after taking the bandage off and continue to do so throughout the healing process.
  • Never rub your tattoo with a rough towel. Use a clean paper towel to pat it completely dry.
  • Apply ointment to protect your tattoo from bacteria.
  • Do not submerge your tattoo in water (bath, swimming pool, hot tub) for 2-3 weeks. Showering is fine, though.
  • Do not pick at any scabbing. To remove, apply a warm compress daily to soften them. They will remove themselves on their own.
  • Protect your tattoo from the sun, as it can damage and fade a tattoo quickly. Use sunblock with SPF 30 and keep it covered.

At Aidance Skincare, we encourage individuals to use our Terrasil Skin Repair ointment to help relieve and treat a fresh tattoo. Skin Repair can speed the recovery process, while keeping bacteria at bay.
