National Blueberries Month: 7 Health Benefits of Blueberries

July 7th, 2014 | Fun, Nutrition and Health, Seasonal

July has been dubbed National Blueberries Month. Are you going to celebrate? We are! July is the perfect time to nosh on blueberries, since it is blueberry-picking season in most areas.

Blueberries are packed with antioxidants, which work in the body to neutralize free radicals linked to cardiovascular disease, the development of cancer, and other health conditions. You could say they are truly a superfood!

To celebrate, we have put together a list of health benefits that blueberries bring to the table. Let’s take a look…

#1: Blueberries contain anthocyanins, a type of flavonoid that can help counter the buildup of plaque and improve cardio health. Blueberries may help reduce the risk of heart disease.

#2: Blueberries are full of vitamin C, serving at least 25% of your daily value. Vitamin C is important when forming collagen and can help boost your immune system.

#3: Blueberries are high in manganese, which helps improve bone health.

#4: Blueberries are packed with fiber, which can aid bowel movement and prevent constipation.

#5: Aid that brain! Studies suggest that blueberries reverse age-related memory loss, due to its large abundance of flavonoids.

#6: Blueberries contain compounds that prevent bacteria from sticking to bladder walls. In other words, they can help to prevent urinary-tract infections.

#7: Best of all, blueberries are low in calories – coming in at about 80 calories for a full cup! If you are looking to lose weight, blueberries make a healthy, filling snack.

If you have not made it out blueberry-picking yet, now would be a good time to go… especially after reading all these benefits.

Be sure to come back on Wednesday. We will be posting our Smoothie of the Month recipe… featuring blueberries, of course! You won’t want to miss out!
