Smoothie of the Month: Kale & Kiwi Kraze

January 8th, 2015 | Fun, Nutrition and Health

We’re kicking off the New Year with a healthy smoothie recipe. Let’s jump right in…

The Recipe

You will need:

  • 1 frozen banana
  • 2 peeled kiwis, cubed
  • 1 cup of washed kale (chopped, if not already)
  • ½ cup almond milk
  • 1 tbs honey

Blend until smooth.

The Benefits

There are two big players in this smoothie. Let’s start with the sweeter one.

  • The vitamin C found in kiwi can help boost the immune system.
  • Vitamin C can also promote young, vibrant skin (aiding the production of collagen).
  • Kiwi is loaded with fiber, which can keep you fuller for longer, as well as help prevent constipation.
  • Kiwi is considered a “safer” fruit for diabetics. This is because kiwi is in the “low” category for glycemic index. It does not raise blood sugar as quickly as most fruits.
  • Kiwi is loaded with vitamin E, which can help protect the skin from degeneration.
  • Rich in amino acids, kiwi may help your body fight harmful rays.

  • Kale is loaded with antioxidants that can help protect against certain types of cancer.
  • Kale has zero fat and is high in fiber. Just another boost of fiber – healthy for the colon!
  • The fiber, alongside sulfur, is also great for detoxification.
  • The copper found in kale can also aid in collagen production, helping to control inflammation. Studies also suggest “copper-dependent enzymes play a role in wound care.”
