How to Avoid Shaving Rash This Summer

May 19th, 2014 | Razor Burn, Seasonal, Skin care

Summer is well on its way. Are you excited to throw on a tank top, shorts, and a bathing suit? We thought so!

Let’s face it: In the summer, you want to feel confident. But wait… razor burn… again? What gives?! Razor burn is never a good look and man, is it irritating!

Cause of Razor Burn

Razor burn may happen when you shave with a dull blade. It can also happen if you shave too close to the skin, taking off the top layer of skin. This will leave the area red and irritated—and worse, prone to bacterial infection.

When minor, razor burn may only last for a few hours before disappearing. However, major burns could last for a few days and could potentially become infected.

How to Avoid Razor Burn

When you go to shave this summer, make a conscience effort to do so properly. Don’t be quick and don’t act rash! If you are currently experiencing razor burn, refrain from shaving for a few days. It is best to wait for the burn to clear, or else you could make it worse.

Once you have the go-ahead to shave, follow these instructions:

  • Avoid shaving RIGHT when you get into the shower. Give it some time to warm your skin up. The softer the hair is, the easier it will be to shave (less irritation!)
  • Before AND after you shave, exfoliate. If you do so before, it will rid of dead skin, allowing for a closer shave. If you do so after, it will help unclog your pores and help prevent ingrown hairs.
  • Never shave without a cream, lotion, or soap. Moisturizer is a necessity!
  • Always shave in the direction of your hair growth rather than against it.
  • Rinse with cold water rather than warm. Cold water will close the pores.
  • Pat dry – no rubbing! Rubbing will cause irritation.

All it takes is a little extra TLC and you can avoid painful razor burn this summer.
