Honey is one of those things you just need to keep on hand, period. It’s natural, and great for much more than just sweetening up your cup of tea!
Have you considered it for skin health? If not, you should. Honey contains minerals, antioxidants, vitamins and enzymes – all of which your skin craves on a regular basis.
It also has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties and has been used since ancient times to promote wound healing. It’s an age-old treatment for burns, ulcers and more, helping to fight infection.
Honey also creates a barrier to protect healing skin from further damage.
According to Discovery Health, raw, organic and unheated honey is the best bet for skin treatments (and, really, for any use). Anything processed will zap it of all that good stuff it is known for, so opt for raw if at all possible.
(Bear in mind, raw honey is a little more difficult to work with because it’s thicker than you may expect. For all of the benefits it comes with, though, it’s well worth any extra effort!)
Honey can be used straight-up, or mixed into exfoliating scrubs, masks and more. The quickest way to calm an angry breakout or irritated skin is just to dab some directly on it, let stand and rinse away with warm water after a few minutes. This soothes skin, calms redness and promotes healing.
You can also use honey as a daily facial cleanser, the same way you use your existing cleanser. Wet your face, apply a bit, rub in and rinse away.
Not much of a do-it-yourselfer? There are many wonderful honey-based treatments out there for purchase. One of the best honey skin treatments we know of features wild honey from Virginia and goats milk with French Rose Clay. Heaven!
One of our favorite natural ways to promote skin health is with a honey face mask.
