Is Your Body Trying to Tell You Something?

July 24th, 2015 | Infographic, Self Improvement

The human body is really cool. It is very intuitive and will tell you what it needs through signals or hints. Some signals may be more subtle than others, but there is one signal that many of us can relate to- FOOD CRAVINGS! If you have ever had a hankering for extra large cheese pizza, maybe a juicy steak, or double fudge brownie, then you know what I am talking about. These cravings may be clues to your body’s needs and they should be listened to. Check out these popular foods to connect the dots between those pesky cravings and the needs of your body.

When you crave chocolate your body may be telling you it needs magnesium. The mineral, magnesium, has been said to help with mood and keeping energy levels balanced. Magnesium is also helpful with constipation, sour stomach, and high blood pressure. Chocolate products can be high in sugar, which is not good, so avoid sugar while still indulging your chocolate craving by opting for a small square of high-cocoa, dark chocolate. Other good sources of magnesium include, dark leafy greens, pumpkin seeds, avocados, and bananas.

Sugar cravings may be responsible for several mineral deficiencies including: chromium, carbon, phosphorus, sulphur, and tryptophan. Sugar should be enjoyed in moderation, so giving into these cravings are not always the best option. Instead look for other foods that satisfy those mineral needs.

Sugar Food Cravings-4

Bread & Pasta

Your body may be telling you it is need of nitrogen. Nitrogen is used in the body to make proteins in your muscles, skin, blood, hair, and nails. Overdoing the bread and pasta can lead to weight gain and low energy. High protein foods like lean meats, nuts, beans, and chia seeds are good alternatives to bread and pasta when your body is craving nitrogen.

Greasy Food

If you are looking for greasy food, it really could be calcium that your body is looking for. Calcium is vital for strong bones and teeth. Look for recipes that incorporate calcium rich foods, without a high fat content. Calcium can be found in traditional cow’s milk, soy milk, sesame seeds, cheese and leafy green vegetables.

Salty Food

Salty french fries are the perfect snack or side, but they are definitely not considered a healthy food. When your body is craving something salty it could be lacking chloride and silicon. Chloride can be found in tomatoes, goat’s milk, and olives. Get your silicon by eating barley, apples, or cucumbers.

Listen your body! Food cravings are not to be ignored. If you are lusting over a meal that may not be high in nutritional value, there is bound to be a healthy alternative that may be exactly what you need.
