Smoothie of the Month: Blueberry & Oat

July 1st, 2015 | Fun, Recipe

July is blueberry month, so we are featuring this hearty Blueberry and Oat Smoothie. This smoothie not only has tangy blueberries, but it also packs ½ cup of oats, making it a great breakfast smoothie that will keep you full through till lunchtime.

The Recipe

1/2 cup old-fashioned oats
1 1/2 cups frozen blueberries
1 cup vanilla yogurt
1/2 cup milk
1 tablespoon honey
1/4 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Blend until smooth.

The Benefits

  • Blueberries, and the vitamin A levels they contain, have been linked to helping regulate sebum production. Sebum is the natural oil our skin produces. People suffering from acne, usually have an overabundance of sebum production. Eating foods high in vitamin A, for example blueberries, helps to balance sebum production.
  • Blueberries also contain a healthy dose of vitamin C, which aside from being amazing for your immune system it will also help prevent against red blotches or tiny red-lines, which are sometimes visible when capillaries break under the skin. These lines can take as long as years to heal themselves, but by eating foods rich in vitamin C daily, capillaries grow stronger and more resistant to breaking.
  • Antioxidants found in blueberries are linked to neutralizing free-radicals, which damage skin cells, and lead to aging. Eating foods high in antioxidants, will promote softer, more youthful looking skin.

  • Eating one cup of oats provides your body with 64% of your daily fiber intake. Fiber regulates the digestive system, making it easier for our bodies to flush away any waste or toxins.
  • Fiber also absorbs some of the cholesterol and fat that is present in the food we eat. High amounts of fat and cholesterol dulls the complexion.
  • Oats are rich in magnesium, which is essential for a strong nervous system, and healthy muscles and bones. Magnesium has also been shown to provide relief from migraines, back pain, and cramps.

With all these benefits, there is no reason not to enjoy this delicious breakfast smoothie every morning! This recipe works well with other nutritious fruits, like banana, strawberries, or peaches- try it with all your favorites.
