Are My Alternative Therapies Covered?

April 30th, 2011 | General News

Your health insurance provider won’t likely shell out the cash for an annual supply of apple cider vinegar or turmeric; but there are a number of other alternative therapies that may be covered.

According to the 2007 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS), adults in the United States spent an estimated $33.9 billion out-of-pocket on complimentary and alternative (CAM) treatments annually. But there is still a major portion of CAM costs covered by health insurance providers.

So what could be covered?

  • Acupuncture: a practice that treats illness or provides local anesthesia by the insertion of needles into the skin at specified sites of the body.
  • Chiropractic: a therapeutic practice based primarily upon the interactions of the spine and nervous system.
  • Massage Therapies: treatments of the body by rubbing, kneading, or similar movements to stimulate circulation, relieve tension, etc.
  • Naturopathy: a system of treating disease that only uses special diets, herbs, vitamins, massage, etc., to assist the natural healing process.

How to be sure you’re covered

ASK! The simplest thing you can do is ask your insurance provider if the treatment you’re seeking will be covered.

A few important questions to ask:

  • Does this treatment need to be pre-approved? Some insurance providers require approval before certain alternative treatments.
  • Do I need a referral from my primary care physician? You may need a referral to ensure you really could benefit from the alternative treatments being sought.
  • What costs will be covered? Certain tests or treatments may or may not be covered. Find out specifically what is.
  • How many visits are covered? Some insurance providers cover number of visits (12 visits) while others cover periods of time (3 months of treatment).
  • Do I need to see a practitioner in your insurance network or can I find one on my own? Many providers limit your treatment options to specific practitioners within their network. Simply ask what offices your insurance provider covers or if you are free to choose.
