7 Ways to Prepare Your Skin for Winter

November 7th, 2011 | Natural Remedies

Winter is on its way and that means winter skin is not far behind. To prepare your skin for colder, drier, darker months of the year, try these tips and keep your skin glowing as if spring were in the air!

  1. Adjust your daily skincare products to accommodate the drier weather. Some people have dry skin most of the year while some have oily skin. With winter typically comes dry, cold air — so depending on your skin type, you may need to adjust your skincare regime. For example, if your skin is oily during the warmer months, your sebum levels (the oil produced by your skin) could even out and you’re oil-reducing face wash may be too harsh and unnecessarily dry your skin in the winter. If your skin is normal the rest of the year, you may need more sensitive products or added moisture during the dry, winter months.
  2. Continue using lukewarm water when showering or washing your face. It’s tempting to crank up the heat on the shower during those frigid mornings, but try to refrain from doing this and keep shower temps lukewarm. Hot water irritates your skin and further dries it out. (Plus it will save on those already increasing heating bills.)
  3. Starting snacking on nuts. Walnuts, almonds, whichever you like. Nuts are a rich source of omega-3’s and will help naturally moisturize your skin from the inside, out.
  4. Moisturize daily. Moisturize after showering to lock in extra moisture. Also pay added attention to sensitive areas like your nose, ears and eyes that may be red and dry from the colder air.
  5. Continue drinking lots of water. It’s hard to drink lots of water when we aren’t working up a sweat, but keep drinking at least 8 glasses a day to keep your skin moisturized and healthy. Add cucumber or lemon slices to your water for a little added flavor.
  6. Don’t skimp on the SPF. The sun is out and still strong enough to burn. Continue to use lip balm and moisturizer with at least SPF 15 whenever you plan on being outside.
  7. Find new ways to relax and enjoy yourself during the colder months. Don’t get stressed and bummed out. The holiday season can be very stressful and the cold can keep you from wanting to do anything fun. There are tons of ways to enjoy yourself in the winter from skiing and snowshoeing to snowball fights with the kids and drinking hot cocoa by a warm fire. Stay active, relax, play games and enjoy yourself.

What are some ways you relax or have fun in the winter? After all, a positive attitude is the first step to achieving a healthy body and healthy skin.
